Makeup business is currently one of the most profitable ventures in Nigeria and the world at large. Everyone wants to look beautiful especially with the invent of pepper dem gang social media thereby leaving an open market for makeup vendors.
In this interview session, Kehinde of Soars Makeup Revolution who runs an online makeup store in Lagos gives us a hint on what it takes to run a pre-owned makeup business.
Can you give us an insight on your makeup business and what your mission was when you started?
At SOARS Makeup Revolution, we connect buyers to sellers of used/pre-owned makeup items. I have been a professional makeup artist for 2 years although I’ve been doing it for 5 years. “Makeup” is the only thing I do for a living.
When we started operations 13 months ago, our mission was to ‘close the gap between quality and affordable makeup’.
I wanted people to wear makeup with ease, because the price of makeup was ridiculous and outrageous.
“If it’s cheap then it’s fake”. I hated that mentality people carried around about makeup. I wanted to change it”
So far, how has it been? Would you say your mission has been achieved?
Gradually, the journey has been challenging…………………….Oh absolutely challenging. I won’t go into details but it’s been my biggest platform to explore & express my dynamics.
In the midst of diverse career paths, why did you choose makeup?Was it something you were passionate about or for quick monetary rewards
Remember I earlier mentioned that I’m a makeup artist? It was from that the idea became possible. I remember years back when I would go to trade fair to buy makeup…money was never enough to buy things I wanted?.
One day I quickly formed friendship with a lady at the store. Because I talk a lot and make friends easily, it wasn’t difficult for me to ask to her to buy something and split the money with me lol.
It has never been about the money oooo. We haven’t started making good money yet. All we’ve been working on is studying the market. This year we’ve put in structure which is being tested.
In few months, when the structure becomes solid, we can think of making money *wink?

Second hand makeup business is currently untapped in Nigeria. How are you able to build a brand out of it?
To be honest, we’re just letting the business teach us. Everyday we resume with activities at work..WE’RE LEARNING from it. The second I sense a loophole, I take time out to THINK.
I call some friends who are solution strategists. We think and create a system to solve that problem.
For me it’s not about makeup or buying and selling, for me it’s about BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS especially something no one has ever done before.
You know what people think of semi-used items. How do you convince customers that your makeup products are germ free?
To be honest we don’t do any convincing at SOARS Makeup Revolution. When you see our standards of selling, you’d understand.?
What Challenges do you face in your line of business?
Oh! a lot…………… a lot of challenges. However, the major one has to be communication. Some sellers find it difficult to communicate excellently. But we’ve devised a better means to take care of that.
Any early mistakes you learnt from at the start of your career?
As long as you’re CERTAIN this is what you want to spend your time and resources on, nothing can stop you. You’ll find a way to make it work. Also, for any new business, it’s your assignment to constantly THINK.
Aside selling makeup products, are there other things you do?
Yes, first of all, I’m a makeup artist and the Head Beauty Artist at SOARS Artistry where we offer professional makeup services.
At SOARS makeup academy we offer professional makeup training. Also at SOARS makeup Revolution we do rental services where we rent out makeup chairs & ringlights for a token of #2,000.
What should customers expect from your brand in the nearest future.
Ermmm, lol. Customers/ buyers should expect the best. There’s no limit to what the mind can express.
